You swear you can hear Duke Ellington’s Caravan crackling on a distant gramophone and the scents of polished brass, sugared orange skins, and smoked tobacco rise with you and each passing floor. The doors open to reveal exquisite parquet floors lining room after room, and sumptuous velvet curtains that frame the view of Rue Lagrange. The hum of tinkering and chatter beckons you through the kitchen and down winding staircases to a maze of long corridors and unexpected spaces. Haussmann’s architectural approach is on fine display here, suggesting a city of many facets and covert lives. Later back on the street, you wander down quiet alleys to find yourself in an ancient amphitheatre hidden in the heart of St. Germain. Limestone and citrus blossoms fill your senses, tickling the summer air. As you retrace your steps, you pass through another door to find a petite piscine, where further surprises await. Content, after a day of intrigue, you retreat to a literary refuge whose walls are lined with first editions, the scent of leather bindings infusing the air…You curl up with Gogol’s infamous short story, drifting into another absurd adventure, this time led by the search for a missing nose.
