The Story
COO COO BÉBÉ
It’s three o’clock in the morning in the Sahara; the sandy African variety, not the plush Las Vegas hotel. You sit back for a moment, reflecting on the last few hours tearing through the desert at wild speeds, with nothing but sand for company. And here you are now, sitting pretty in a verdant oasis. Can it be real?
The air is hot and heavy and the music vibrates deep inside your bones. Lights twinkle to the clinking of glasses amidst the chattering of different tongues. Dust lies thick on your surroundings and your skin feels dry despite the heat. You can still smell the sweet fragrances of spice and wood encountered at the Marché Central earlier that day. The crackling fire makes you think of ancient dry lands, when life was centred around storytelling and nomadic movement across uncharted earth.
‘Coo coo bébé!’, a smiling face and a tap on the shoulder interrupts your dream state, beckoning you to rejoin the festivities. As another camel leisurely strolls past, dawn announces its imminent arrival and you realise that none of this was an illusion.
Inspired by the road between the Hadjer Lamis Region and Mongo - Republic of Tchad.
