The Story
THUNDER RUMBLES
Your feet sink ever so slightly into the soft, red sand as you step beneath the forest canopy into this Land of Giants. Haunting, ghostlike Fever Trees surround you, their whitewashed limbs stretching tall into the air above, where a thin veil of fine leaves blankets the overcast sky. The air is still; your awareness heightens with each step you take as you make your way quietly through the towering trunks. You feel eyes upon you, but there are none to be seen.
Leaving the enveloping forest behind, you become immediately conscious of your new surroundings; the sand beneath your feet hardens and the light is brighter. The skies above start to rumble, and in every direction of this arid red earth insects break into a deafening chorus. Suddenly and without warning, all sound ceases, the air becomes static, and rain begins to fall. The scene erupts into a playful dance between drops and dust; grand leaps and explosions occur as water hits the dry ground. The rain is warm and soothing on your skin, and the insects once again chime in with a celebratory song. Then, as quickly as it began the rain stops and the music quietens to a low hum. Before long the final sensorial feast commences— earth and flora begin a silent symphony, releasing their dormant perfumes to celebrate the end of the dry season.
Inspired by the Fever Tree forests of the Makuleke Contractual Park (RSA) and the road to the Pafuri Triangle in Zimbabwe.
